Hokies collect five top marks in Saturday's events
Competition at Bucknell resumes Sunday at 11 a.m.

CHARLOTTE, N.C. – The Virginia Tech track & field team’s sprinters competed at the Charlotte Invite at the Irwin Belk Track and Field Center, collecting numerous personal best times in addition to two top-finishes.

The 4x100-meter relay of Ama-Selina Tchume, Courtney Blanden, Shanel Burr, and Adeyeni Aromolaran led off the day for the Hokies with a first place finish out of six teams in the event.

Burr’s success continued as she placed second in the 100-meter hurdles in 13.81 while Jada Gundran placed sixth. On the men’s side, Aaron Simpson set a new personal record in the 110-meter hurdles, finishing sixth in 14.59.

In the 200-meter dash, the women’s team finished first, second, fourth, and fifth led by Tchume taking the crown. Blanden was the runner-up followed by Burr and Aromolaran, respectively. For the men’s team Jared Bane and Dante Price placed a respective seventh and 13th.

Blanden recorded a personal best in the 400 meters, clocking in at 55.42 to place second while Tchume finished sixth in 56.97. Bane led the men’s team with yet another personal best finish in 49.30.

Both Austin Kolko and Alexander Merritt set personal records in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing second in 53.20 and fifth in 53.51, respectively.

Aromolaran led the Hokies in the 100-meter dash, placing fifth wile Darius Watkins and Price took ninth and 15th on the men’s side.

LEWISBURG, Pa. – The Hokies distance squad continued the trend with top marks at the Bucknell Bison Outdoor Classic on Saturday.

Stuart Robertson paved the way for the group with a top mark in the 3,000-meter steeplechase, clocking in at 8:57.90.

Tech continued the trend with first place finish in the 5,000 meters for the men’s team. In first, Neil Gourley’s 14:02.40-time earned him a fifth place standing in the Hokies’ record book while Peter Seufer’s 14:04.32 put him at ninth place all-time. Diego Zarate clocked in at 14:18.69 to place fourth in the 5,000 meters. For the women’s team Lauren Berman clocked in at 16:49.42 to place ninth overall.

In the 1,500 meters, Rachel Pocratsky took the crown in 4:19.82, a time that ranks fifth in Virginia Tech’s record books. Hanna Green rounded out the top-10, placing seventh in 4:26.55.

For the men’s team, Thomas Curtin paced the group, clocking in at 3:44.93 to earn fourth place overall and rank ninth in program history. Vincent Ciattei placed 16th with a season best time of 3:50.20. Both Kevin Cianfarini and Andrew Gaiser set new personal records in 3:53.03 and 3:53.65, respectively.

In the final seeded events of the day, Amanda Swaak, Brent Musselman, and Daniel Rau each earned top-25 finishes in the 10k. For the women’s team, Swaak finished in 37:03.86 to place 13th. On the men’s side, Musselman and Rau clocked in at 30:08.78 and 30.25.69, respectively.

Andrew Eason continued Tech’s success with a second place finish in the unseeded 10,000 meters with a time of 32:12.47. Jennifer Fleming and Emily Beatty followed suite in the open 1,500 meters with seventh and 14th place marks, including a personal best for Beatty in 4:44.66.

In the final unseeded event of the day, Baron Kieffer and Collin Hahn collected top-25 finishes in the 5k, clocking in at 14:53.95 and 15:03.18, respectively.

The Hokies resume competition on Sunday morning at 11 a.m. beginning with 3,000 meters event.
