MIAMI - Nora McKiver and Aaron Simpson highlighted the final day of the Hurricane Invitational, as each scored top marks in the 100-meter and 110-meter hurdles, respectively, wrapping up the Virginia Tech track & field team’s first meet of the outdoor season.
McKiver began the day in the 4x100-meter relay with Ama-Selina Tchume, Adeyeni Aromolaran, and Courtney Blanden, placing third in 45.67. The men’s relay of Dante Price, Darius Watkins, Jared Bane, and David Prince one-upped the women, finishing second in 41.86.
Simpson took the crown in lane five of the 110-meter hurdles with a 14.78-time, nearly missing a new personal record.
Tech collected three top-five finishes in the field events, led by David Prince’s 7.14-meter (23-5.25) long jump earned him fourth place and a 10th place ranking in the Virginia Tech record books. Kacia Vines represented the women’s team with a 5.59-meter (18-4.25) long jump to also earn a fourth place result.
Jordan Roach rounded out the group of throwers at the Hurricane Invitational with his second place discus throw of 52.29 meters (171-7).
For the women’s team, McKiver’s success continued with a 13.73 time in the 100-meter hurdles to not only win the event but also set a new personal best. Burr earned fourth place with her 13.95-time. Jada Gundran rounded out the top-five with a 13.96 finish.
In the 400 meters, Blanden placed third in 56.35 while Tchume finished 11th in 59.02. On the men’s side, Chester Hebden led the group of five Hokies, placing 12th overall in 49.03.
Tech posted two top-10 finishes in the 100-meter dash, led by Watkins’ 10.50 third place finish to rank eighth in program history. Aromolaran set a personal record in her 12.00-finish to earn seventh place.
Austin Kolko led the Hokies’ in the 400-meter hurdles, finishing third in 54.32 while Alexander Merritt placed seventh. Burr and Gundran rounded out the women’s side with fifth and seventh place finishes to record new personal bests of 1:05.05 and 1:05.23, respectively.
The 200-meter dash concluded the individual track events. Both McKiver and Watkins recorded times to earn spots in the Virginia Tech record book. McKiver’s 23.66-finish clinched second place to rank sixth all-time while Watkins’ 20.96-time moves him up to ninth all-time.
The track events concluded with the 4x400-meter relay. The women’s relay took second in 3:49.64 while the men placed fifth in 3:15.08.
The Hokies will take a week off before traveling to the Colonial Relays in Williamsburg, Virginia, the Florida Relays in Gainesville and the Texas Relays in Austin.
