BLACKSBURG, Va. - Hokie distance runner Frances Dowd and Tech pole vaulter Stephan Munz were named to the 2014 Capital One Academic All-America® Division I Men’s and Women’s Track and Field/Cross Country teams, as selected by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) on Thursday afternoon. Dowd earned first team honors while Munz was named to the second team.
Dowd, a senior from Fairfax, Virginia, carries a 4.00 G.P.A. in environmental policy and planning. She earned Capital One Academic All-America® first team honors for the first time in 2012, making this her second Academic All-America honor of her career. Dowd placed fourth in the 800 meters at the 2014 ACC Indoor Track and Field Championship. Highlighting her career was the 15th-place finish at the 2012 NCAA Championship in the 800-meter run en route to second team All-American honors.
A grauate student from Goppingen, Germany, Stephan Munz earned second team Academic All-America honors. Munz, who at the time of nominations had a 3.72 GPA in curriculum and instruction, won his first ACC title this past season at the ACC Outdoor Track & Field Championships in the men's pole vault. Munz was also named a second team All-American this season after a 16th place finish in the pole vault at the national championships.
