28 Hokies set to compete at NCAA East Regional
Team sends the second-most athletes to regional in school history

JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – 28 student athletes will embark on a trip to Jacksonville, Fla. for the 2014 NCAA East Regional in hopes of qualifying for the 2014 Division I Outdoor Track & Field Championships.

The 28 competitors that the Hokies are sending are the second most in school history behind the 37 competitors that Tech sent in 2012. With 18 entries on the men’s side, this is the most in the ACC.

In order to qualify for the 2014 NCAA Championships, each competitor must finish in the top 12 of their respective event. Nine Hokies currently rank in the top 10 in their individual events in the East Region and four of them also rank in the top 10 nationally.

Three distance runners, three pole vaulters and three throwers rank in the top 10 in the east region in their events. Amanda Smith is ranked sixth in the women’s 800-meter distance while Grant Pollock ranks fourth in the men’s 1500-meter distance. Jared Berman also ranks fourth in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase while ranking eighth nationally.

Martina Schultze is ranked fourth in the East in the women’s pole vault and sixth nationally while Stephan Munz and Torben Laidig rank fifth and seventh, respectively, in the East in the men’s pole vault.

Eva Vivod ranks second in the East region and fourth nationally in the javelin throw while Sabine Kopplin ranks eighth in the javelin in the East. Tomas Kruzliak ranks third in the men’s hammer throw in the region and seventh nationally.
