Hokies post quality performances at Florida and Colonial Relays
Tech grabs three first-place finishes

GAINSEVILLE, Fla. and WILLIAMSBURG, Va. – The Virginia Tech track & field team put in an array of quality performances at both the Florida and Colonial Relays.

At the Florida Relays hosted by the University of Florida, Eva Vivod, competing in the first meet of her collegiate career, won the women’s javelin throw with a mark of 186’04” (56.80m), the furthest throw in the nation so far this season. Vivod's mark was also a new school record, passing All-American Dee O'Connells record set in 2002. Vivod also set a new ACC record with her throw. Sabine Kopplin finished in second with a throw of 161’01 (49.11m) while teammate Sarah Kadelka finished in 10th with a mark of 145’06 (44.35m).

In a field of 63 competitors, Jasmine Mitchell finished in 20th place in the women’s 400-meter race with a time of 54.58 seconds. She was the third fastest finisher of any ACC competitor.

Christine London ran her fastest time this season in the 400-meter hurdles posting a mark of 1:00.83. Nora McKiver also posted her fastest time this season (1:03.74).

Tomas Kruzliak, the defending national champion in the hammer throw, finished fifth in the men’s hammer throw with a mark of 225’03” (68.67m).

At the Colonial Relays hosted by William & Mary, Abigail Motley posted a third-place finish in the women’s 3000-meter race with a time of 9:51.92. Paige Kvartunas finished 12th in the race with a time of 10:12.42.

Katarina Smiljanec posted a time of 2:10.94 in the women’s 800-meter race to finish in fifth place overall.

Katherine Sheridan raced her way to a third-place finish (11:09.14) in the women’s 3000-meter steeplechase.

Shannon Morton, Amanda Smith and Sarah Rapp all posted top 10 finishes in the women’s 1500-meter race. Morton posted a time of 4:24.85 for a second-place finish, while Smith finished in third with a time of 4:25.27 and Rapp finished in sixth with a time of 4:28.75.

Three Hokies finished in the top 10 of the men’s 3000-meter race with Daniel Jaskowak leading the way with a time of 8:28.84 good for a first-place finish. George Carter finished in fifth place with a time of 8:33.84 while Ashkan Mohammadi posted an eighth place finish with a time of 8:38.36.

Patrick Joseph won the men’s 800-meter race with an impressive time of 1:49.92. Martin Dally finished in seventh place with a time of 1:51.00.

Jared Berman (3rd, 9:08.57), Stuart Robertson (5th, 9:18.01) and Neil Gourley (6th, 9:19.10) all finished in the top 10 for the Hokies in the men’s 3000-meter steeplechase.

The Hokies placed four runners in the top 10 of the men’s 1500-meter race. Grant Pollock won the race with a time of 3:46.49. Leoule Degfae finished second (3:47.26), Juan Campos finished seventh (3:50.60) and Vince Ciattei finished ninth (3:51.08).

Andrew Gaiser finished eighth in the men’s 10000-meter race with a time of 31:10.52

The Hokie runners will continue tomorrow at both the Florida and Colonial Relays while the pole vaulters will compete at the Tiger Track Classic hosted by Auburn University.
