Senior takes home third Scholar-Athlete of the Year distinction

NEW ORLEANS, La.- Senior thrower Alexander Ziegler added yet another honor to his name when he was selected by the USTFCCCA as the 2013 Men’s Indoor Track and Field Scholar-Athlete of the Year.

This is the third year in a row Ziegler has received this distinction. The Dischingen, Germany native was named the Men’s Outdoor Scholar-Athlete of the Year in 2011 and 2012.

A management major, Ziegler has held a 3.72 GPA through four years of competition.

Outside of the classroom, Ziegler is also an accomplished thrower. Ziegler’s freshman year saw him earn All-American status in the weight throw with a 72-6.75 heave at the NCAA Indoor Track and Field Championships. That same year, Ziegler earned All-American status in the hammer throw at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships finishing second with a throw of 237-7.

During his sophomore year, Ziegler earned an All-America nod in the weight throw after finishing second in the NCAA Indoor meet. Later that season, Ziegler won a national title in the hammer throw at the outdoor NCAA meet.

His junior season saw Ziegler earn more honor as he received another All-American nod at the indoor championships after a third place finish in the weight throw. For the second year in a row, Ziegler took home a national championship at the NCAA Outdoor Track and Field Championships after a personal best of 248-7.

Ziegler was finally able to win an indoor national championship title during his senior year in the weight throw. The senior was one of only two male hammer/weight throwers in the past 25 years to win multiple national championships and finish no lower than third in every NCAA Championship during their career.
