Hokies open outdoor season with a strong showing in Florida
Black, Schultze, Uhle pick up wins

CORAL GABLES, Fla./ATHENS, Ga. - It was a good start to the outdoor season for the Virginia Tech's high-flying athletes today as Hokies swept the pole vault competitions and won the men's high jump on day one of the Hurricane Invitational.
In the women's pole vault, Martina Schultze opened up her second outdoor season as a Hokie by tying her school-record mark of 14-1.25 (4.30m) on her first attempt. The sophomore though was unable to set a new school record at 14-6 (4.40m). In the men's competition, sophomore Chris Uhle produced a new personal record as cleared 16-10.75 (5.15m) on his first attempt to give him the win.
In the men's high jump, Ronnie Black came up half an inch shy of tying his school as his best clearance came in at 7-2.5 (2.20m). The senior breezed through the early heights missing only one attempt prior reaching his final mark. After two misses, Black was able to get up and over the bar on his third attempt at 7-2.5.
At the Georgia Relays, the distance teams were competing in the 5,000 meters. The men took three of the top six spots with Leoule Degfae leading the way in fourth with a time of 15:06.62. Brian Welch was just behind him in fifth at 15:07.09, followed by Darren Barlow at 15:08.63.
On the women's side, Tech grabbed four of the top nine places as Sarah Rapp came away with the top finish of the day in fourth at 17:26.38. Sammy Dow was two spots back of her in sixth at 17:29.71 and Madalyn Nuckols was just behind her at 17.37.00. Paige Kvartunas rounded out Tech's top four finishers as she came in at 17:51:61 for ninth.
The Hokies wrapped up their action at the Georgia Relays with today's events, but the sprinters will hit the track in Coral Gables tomorrow on the final day of the Hurricane Invitational.
