LYNCHBURG, Va. - The Hokie track & field team opened up the indoor season with a strong showing this weekend with heptathlete Scott Campbell and pole vaulter Leigh Allin leading the way at the Liberty Kickoff at the Tolsma Indoor Track Center. Campbell and Allin each won their events.
After taking a 58-point lead into the second day of the heptathlon, Campbell finished second in each of the remaining three events and captured the heptathlon title with 4,959 points, more than 600 points clear of second place.
Day two of the meet saw the pole vaulters open up their season as the women were up first in the morning. Three Hokies finished in the top five as Allin won the event at 12-1 (3.70m). Sophomore Lyndsey Saunders and freshman Grace Giampietro were tied for the third-best mark of the day at 11-3.75 (3.45m). Giampietro was competing unattached.
Sophomore Chris Uhle had Tech's highest finish in the men's pole vault. His clearance of 15-9 (4.80m) was the second-best mark in the event and the top one by a non-unattached competitor. Freshman Brad Johnson, competing unattached, also cleared 15-9. Former Tech All-Americans Joe Davis and Hunter Hall, who were also competing in the event, cleared 15-9 as well.
The Hokies will start the home slate of their indoor season as they host the VT Invitational on Jan. 18-19 at Rector Field House.
