GREENSBORO, N.C. – The Virginia Tech swimming and diving program collected three medals, including a gold on the third day of the 2013 ACC Men's Swimming and Diving Championships Friday evening at the Greensboro Aquatic Center. The H2Okies set four school records out of six events.
The H2Okies came out blazing as they shattered all three records in the 400 medley relay. The quartet of Zach McGinnis, Gregory Mahon, Emmett Dignan and Joe Bonk finished with a record-breaking time of 3:07.17, good for a school, conference and championship record, and automatically qualifying them for the NCAAs.
This marks the first year that Tech claimed the gold medal in the 400 medley relay since joining the conference in 2004.
The 100 butterfly was a big event for the H2Okies, individually. Tech placed three swimmers in the championship to rack in 42 points. Mahon added to his medal collection as he touched the wall second to beat his 2012 time and set a new school record with 46.22. He just missed first place by .02 seconds.
Nick Tremols and Morgan Latimer were also in the 100 butterfly championship. Tremols placed sixth with a time of 47.22, while Latimer took seventh with a time of 47.46.
McGinnis added a silver medal to his collection as well. He took second in the 100 backstroke with a time of 46.28 to set another school record. Collin Higgins placed eighth with a time of 48.23 to help collectively bring in 28 points in the event.
Dignan was the top finisher for Tech in the 100 breaststroke. The junior took a time of 54.15 to place eighth, good for 11 points. Harrison Cefalo and Nathan Hoisington also scored.
Cefalo finished in 12th with a time of 55.02, while Hoisington followed in at 15th with a time of 55.28 to collectively add six points to the H2Okie total.
Alex Lutterbein brought in seven points for the H2Okies as he placed 10th in the 400 IM to set another school record. He touched the wall at the 3:48.01 mark, good for a NCAA B cut. Jake Ores swam in the bonus heat and set a personal best with a time of 3:55.72.
After setting a school record in the the 200 freestyle this morning with a time of 1:36.68, Lucas Bureau scored for Tech as he placed 13th with a time of 1:37.55. Michal Szuba followed in at 16th with a time of 1:38.51.
Through event 14, including the 3-meter springboard, leading the ACC after day three are the Virginia Cavaliers with 528 points and Tech follows with 400. North Carolina is in third with 374 and Florida State is fourth with 353. NC State sits fifth with 323.5 points, while Duke, Georgia Tech and Boston College round out the pack.
Competition will start back up tomorrow with the preliminaries starting at 11 a.m., followed by the finals at 7 p.m. The events tomorrow are the 200 backstroke, 100 freestyle, 200 breaststroke, 200 butterfly and the 1650 freestyle.
