CHRISTIANSBURG, Va. – The 200 medley relay team of the Virginia Tech men’s swimming squad highlighted day one of the 2012 ACC Men’s Swimming Championships as they brought home the gold Wednesday evening at the Christiansburg Aquatic Center.

The H₂Okie men started the day off strong swimming a ‘B’ standard, school and pool record time of 1:26.34 in the 200 medley relay event. The quartet of Charlie Higgins, Emmett Dignan, Gregory Mahon and Greg Morgan took home the first gold medal of the night to bring in 40 points for Tech.

“That medley relay was the perfect way to start our week. We haven’t won a relay on the men’s side in a few years so it’s nice to get back to the top of the podium,” stated head coach, Ned Skinner.

In the 800 freestyle relay, consisting of Nick Tremols, Blake Trabuchi-Downey, Owen Burns and Zach McGinnis, Tech took fifth place with a ‘B’ standard time of 6:31.03. The University of Virginia took gold with a time of 6:18.35.

“The energy on the men’s side is very high right now and it showed even in that 800 free relay with the efforts from our men. We hope to channel that to a great day tomorrow,” commented Skinner.

Tech goes into day 2 in the lead with 68 overall points, while North Carolina is just two points shy with 66. The Cavaliers sit third with 58 points, while NC State, Duke and Florida State are all tied for fourth with 56 points. Georgia Tech (52), Maryland (48), Clemson (48) and Boston College (28) all round out the pack.

Competition will start back up tomorrow, Feb. 23, with the preliminaries beginning at 11 a.m., followed by finals beginning at 7 p.m.
