BLACKSBURG - Sophomore Carrie Eberle went six innings and allowed only two earned runs but Virginia Tech couldn’t take from the rubber match of a three-game series from Duke as the Blue Devils topped the Hokies, 5-0, in front of 584 on Senior Day at Tech Softball Park.
Eberle took the loss for the Hokies (20-27, 6-14 ACC) despite allowing two earned runs or less for the 12th consecutive start.
Tech had two runners on in the bottom of the first on a walk from junior Emma Strouth and a single from Eberle that moved Strouth to third but neither could score. Sophomore Taylor Clark led off the third with a single to right but she was also left stranded.
Duke took advantage of Tech’s runners on left as they scored runs in the top of the fourth and top of the fifth on RBI singles before breaking through with three in the sixth that made it 5-0.
The Hokies will next travel to Atlanta where they will face Georgia Tech in a three-game series that runs from April 27-29.
