BLACKSBURG - Senior Caroline Schoenewald’s run scored on an error in the first inning and junior Olivia Lattin’s solo home run in the second was all Carrie Eberle needed in the circle against Notre Dame as the sophomore stifled the Irish bats all evening in a 2-1 win for Virginia Tech on Friday.

The Hokies (13-18, 2-7 ACC) snapped a 12-game losing streak against the Irish (21-12, 5-4 ACC) with the win. Eberle registered her 11th complete game of the season and her 10th start allowing one earned run or less. She went the full seven, struck out two and tallied nine assists, a career high that also tied the program record done last by Jasmin Harrell against Marshall in the NCAA Regionals on May 18, 2015.

Schoenewald the game started with a single through the left side. With junior Emma Strouth at the plate, Schoenewald stole second, advanced to third on an errant throw by the catcher and then scored on a throwing error by the center fielder, putting the Hokies on the board 1-0.

After Eberle retired her sixth batter in a row in the top of the second second, Lattin ripped a 2-1 pitch over the left center field fence, extending Tech’s lead to 2-0 in the home half. It was Lattin’s third home run of the season.

After the Hokies left the bases loaded in the bottom of the third, the Irish got the lead off runner on via a base hit, their first of the game. The base runner was erased after the next batter chopped a grounder that was fielded by Nolan who stepped on second for the first out and got the second out at first to complete the double play. A groundout to Lattin ended the inning.

Eberle sat down six of the next seven batters she faced, all on groundouts, in the fifth and sixth innings. The sophomore was credited with an assist on five of those outs. Despite surrendering the shutout in the top of the seventh, Eberle induced another groundout to sophomore Taylor Clark at third base that ended the ballgame.

The Hokies and Irish will play a noon doubleheader tomorrow that will conclude the series.
