Hokies to honor 2008 WCWS team throughout the 2018 season
The greatest team in program history is celebrating its 10th anniversary
January 31, 2018
BLACKSBURG – To celebrate 10 years since the Virginia Tech softball program’s magical 2008 campaign, the program will honor that squad throughout the 2018 season with a reunion at Tech Softball Park in March, an extended cut of HokieVision’s documentary “Miracle on Dirt” and a weekly series on social media chronicling the Hokies’ run to the Women’s College World Series.
Players and staff from the 2008 team will reunite on Saturday, March 24, for the second game of the Hokies’ ACC series against Pitt at Tech Softball Park at noon. More details on the first official reunion of the 2008 team will be announced in the coming weeks.
From the first tournament of the 2008 season in Miami, to the ACC championship, to the Super Regional win in Ann Arbor that sent the Hokies to Oklahoma City, the program will highlight key games from that season in a weekly social media series titled “This Day in 2008”. Fans can follow and series and Tech softball all season long on Twitter and Instagram (@HokiesSoftball).
Fans can also expect an extended cut version of HokieVision’s 2017 documentary “Miracle on Dirt”, featuring new interviews with former student-athletes and staff. The first version of the documentary, featuring head coach Scot Thomas, assistant coach Angela Tincher O’Brien, former Virginia Tech catcher Kelsey Hoffman and former assistant coach Al Brauns, can be viewed by clicking on the link at the top of the story.
Tech finished the 2008 season with a 49-19 overall record and a 16-5 mark in conference play en route to claiming its second consecutive ACC Championship. After beating Michigan in the Super Regionals, Virginia Tech became only the second ACC program to advance to the Women’s College World Series. The Hokies and Florida State are still the only two ACC schools to reach Oklahoma City. In the middle of that season, the Hokies pulled off arguably the greatest upset in the history of the sport as Tincher no-hit the United States National Team in a 1-0 exhibition vcitory.
