April 4, 2017
BLACKSBURG – After taking two out of three from Georgia Tech this past weekend, the Virginia Tech softball team will host Elon for a 2 p.m. doubleheader on Wednesday at Tech Softball Park. Both games will be streamed on WatchESPN via HokieVision LIVE and live stats will be available on HokieSports.com.
The Hokies (15-19, 5-10 ACC) are 6-0 all-time against the Phoenix (21-13, 2-4 CAA) in a series that dates back to 1998. Tech topped Elon last season in North Carolina, 5-3, on April 27.
THE VIRGINIA TECH-ELON CONNECTION
- While the student-athletes will decide the winner of Wednesday’s doubleheader, family bragging rights will also be on the line as members of two coaching staffs share bloodlines.
- Virginia Tech assistant coach Justin Miller’s aunt is Elon head coach Kathy Bocock, who’s in her fifth season leading the Phoenix.
- Elon volunteer assistant coach Nicole Thomas is the twin sister of Virginia Tech volunteer assistant coach Lindsay Thomas.
- In 2016, the sisters both wrapped up standout careers at UNC Greensboro, where Lindsay is the Spartans’ all-time leader in batting average (.382), hits (257) and home runs (57).
RICHARDSON NAMED ACC PLAYER OF THE WEEK
- Junior Aysha Richardson was named ACC Player of the Week after hitting .667 (8-for-12) and allowing only three hits in 6.1 innings of work in the circle in a series victory over Georgia Tech last weekend.
- Richardson registered three multi-hit games hitting out of the No. 2 spot in the lineup and crossed the plate three times while also driving in two runs.
- The Louisa, Virginia native currently leads the team with a .396 batting average and ranks second with 36 strikeouts in the circle.
- In the series clincher on Saturday, Richardson went 3-for-4 with an RBI single and earned the win after surrendering only one hit in four innings pitched.
