Hokies fall to Georgia Tech, 7-3

Yellow Jackets salvage the final game of the series and avoid the sweep

BLACKSBURG – Despite clinching the series with a 13-6 victory yesterday afternoon, the Virginia Tech softball team couldn’t complete the sweep of Georgia Tech as the Yellow Jackets (11-25, 4-8 ACC) topped the Hokies (15-19, 5-10 ACC), 7-3, on Sunday afternoon at Tech Softball Park.

Senior Vanessa Gonzalez and sophomore Olivia Lattin each registered home runs while junior Aysha Richardson and sophomore Lauren Duff both turned in multi-hit games for the Hokies. Richardson also struck out five in 2.1 innings of relief in the circle.

Trailing 7-0 entering the bottom of the fifth, Gonzalez led off the inning with her eighth home run of the season on a 3-2 count that put the Hokies on the board. Her solo bomb was the 24th of her career, two away from tying Lauren Gaskill for fifth program history.

A single down the left field line from Richardson brought Lattin to the plate, who then launched a 1-0 pitch over the fence in left that cut the deficit to four, 7-3.

Richardson blanked the Jackets in the sixth and freshman Carrie Eberle came out of the bullpen to record three outs in a bases loaded no out situation but the Tech bats couldn’t find a spark. Georgia Tech starter Emily Anderson retired the final six batters she faced to earn the win.

Virginia Tech will wrap up a five-game homestand this week with 5 p.m. doubleheader against Elon on Wednesday, April 5.
