RALEIGH, N.C. - The Virginia Tech softball team put five runs on the board by the third inning but NC State fought back, handing Tech the 7-5 decision in the final game of the weekend at Dail Stadium.
The Hokies secured a five-run lead off the bats of Olivia Lattin and Kelsey Mericka but the Wolfpack responded with two homeruns, tying the game at five before taking the lead in the sixth.
At the conclusion of the first ACC series, Tech sits at 6-12 overall, 1-2 in conference while NC State improves to an even 9-9 record, 2-1 in ACC play.
After a quiet first inning, Elizabeth Birle sent single to right field to put two on the bags as Caitlyn Nolan advanced to second. The Wolfpack ended the inning with an unassisted putout but not before Olivia Lattin ripped an RBI-single to right, bringing Ashley Kowalski home.
Tech extended the margin to three runs by the end of the third inning. Katey Smith singled to leadoff the inning before Chelsea Whitcomb ripped a standup double to right. Kinsey Johnson put the ball in play, allowing both Smith and Whitcomb to score on the Wolfpacks first of three errors.
The Hokies’ momentum continued in the fourth as they lengthened the advantage to five. Smith put the ball in play as Lattin came home on another NC State error before Mericka sent a sacrifice fly to right, allowing Vanessa Gonzalez to score.
However, the Wolfpack showed its resilience after being held scoreless in the first four innings. NC State scored its first run on a sacrifice fly before Molly Hutchison tied the game with a 3-RBI homerun.
The Wolfpack tacked on two more runs in the sixth to clinch the 7-5 decision.
Maggie Tyler picked up the loss while NC State’s Courtney Mirabella earned the win.
The Hokies travel to the College of Charleston for a midweek doubleheader at 4 p.m.
