BLACKSBURG, Va. - Virginia Tech head softball coach Scot Thomas announced Friday that former collegiate baseball standout and Presbyterian College softball assistant Justin Miller has been hired as an assistant softball coach at Virginia Tech after spending three seasons at PC.

“I am really excited to announce that Justin will be our next softball assistant coach,” said Thomas, who will be entering his 20th season at the helm of the Hokies. “He will primarily work with our hitters and outfielders, as well as being our lead recruiter. Justin brings to us a combination of baseball background with softball coaching experience. Having grown up in a softball/baseball-rich family and area, he has a real passion for the game that will contribute to our vision and quest for more ACC titles and a trip back to the Women’s College World Series.”

As an assistant in 2012, Miller helped Presbyterian to an historic win at the Big South Conference tournament, the first in program history. His expertise helped produce the team’s highest on-base percentage and most RBIs in a season since 2008, with several players earning all-conference honors.

“I am extremely excited to join Scot Thomas and the Virginia Tech softball program,” Miller said. “This is a program with historical success and I am very grateful to be a part of the Hokie tradition.”

Miller joined the Blue Hose after serving as assistant coach at Akron University. There, he worked with the baseball program and coached outfielders and catchers and assisted with hitters.

Prior to Akron, Miller was at The Ohio State University and coached position players, specializing in working with the catchers. Miller has also worked various baseball and softball camps and has done private instruction.

A two-time team captain of the Buckeyes who played in Columbus from 2006-09, Miller helped lead OSU to a Big Ten tournament title in 2007 and a Big Ten regular-season crown in 2009. Miller, a two-time all-conference selection, was twice nominated for the Wallace Award and is still listed in several categories in Ohio State record books, including second in career hits (268) and third in career at-bats (799), doubles (52) and RBIs (176). He hit .395 as a junior with 61 RBIs and finished his distinguished career with a batting average of .335.

A native of Dayton, Virginia, Miller graduated from Turner Ashby High School before graduating from Ohio State University in 2009 with a degree in sociology. He is married to the former Mallory Mayhew.

Miller will replace Al Brauns, who retired at the end of June after 16 years as an assistant coach with the Hokies.
