COLLEGE PARK, Md. - Despite scoring five runs in the top of the first inning, the Virginia Tech softball team dropped a 9-6 decision to No. 20 Notre Dame Friday afternoon in the semifinals of the ACC Softball Championship at Maryland Softball Stadium.
Tech came out on fire, scoring five runs on five hits in the first frame. Kylie McGoldrick and Vanessa Gonzalez both scored on an error before Katey Smith and Dani Anderson scored on a double from Amanda Ake. The final run of the frame came when Logan Spaw singled in Ake to make it 5-0.
That’s the way it stood through three innings as Maggie Tyler sat down the first nine Irish batters.
In the fourth inning, though, Notre Dame erupted for seven runs on seven hits as it sent 12 batters to the plate. The Hokies responded in their half of the fifth inning when Gonzalez led off with a home run, but the Irish used three walks and two hits to score two big insurance runs in the sixth inning to ice the game.
Gonzalez and Logan Spaw led the way with two hits apiece while Lauren Gaskill, Bailey Liddle, Smith and Ake each had one.
Tyler went 4.0 innings, allowing five runs on four hits with six strikeouts while Kelly Heinz (L, 20-13) went 2.0 innings, allowing four runs (three earned) on six hits with four walks and a strikeout.
Tech (35-21) must now wait and see if its season continues. The NCAA Selection Show will announce the 64-team field on Sunday at 10 p.m. on ESPNU.
