SYRACUSE, N.Y. – Behind a three-hitter from Sydney O’Hara, the Syracuse softball team downed Virginia Tech 7-3 Sunday at SU Softball Stadium as the Orange took the critical series with its second win of the weekend.
After flirting with danger early on in the first two innings, Kelly Heinz finally succumbed to the Orange offense in the third inning as she gave up five runs. A hit, a Tech error, a hit batter loaded the bases before Jasmine Watson curled a grand slam just inside the right field foul pole to make it 4-0. Another runner who reached on an error eventually scored on a double and then the Cuse tacked on one more off Maggie Tyler to cap a six-run third inning.
Tech finally got its first hit of the game in the fifth inning when Lauren Gaskill launched a solo home run to right-center field, her third home run of the series and her sixth of the season.
In the sixth inning, Amanda Ake lifted a two-run home run down the right field line to plate pinch runner Toni Erwin to make it 6-3. For Ake, it was her team-leading 10th home run of the season.
Syracuse added a big insurance run in the sixth inning to make it 7-3 heading to the final inning and Tech couldn’t muster anything in the seventh inning.
Tech’s three hits came from Gaskill, Ake and a single from Dani Anderson.
A day after shutting down the Syracuse offense, Heinz struggled in the circle. She lasted just two innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits with three strikeouts and two hit batters. Tyler went the final four innings, allowing two runs (one earned) on four hits with a walk and six strikeouts.
Syracuse improved to 24-24 and finished ACC play with a 12-12 record while Tech dropped to 32-20 and finished conference play at 19-9. The Hokies will have to wait and see what Notre Dame does in its final ACC series next weekend to determine seeding, but the Hokies can be no lower than the No. 3 seed at the conference tournament.
The Hokies are scheduled to wrap up the regular season on Wednesday with a doubleheader at home against Radford set to begin at 4 p.m.
