COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Maryland softball team handed Virginia Tech an 8-1 defeat Sunday in the series finale at Maryland Softball Stadium to snap the Hokies’ 11-game winning streak.

Maryland struck first when Candice Beards blasted a three-run home run to right field in the bottom of the third inning to give the Terrapins.

The Terps tacked on two unearned runs in the fifth inning to put stretch the lead to five runs. The Hokies got on the board in the sixth inning when Vanessa Gonzalez cranked her sixth home run of the season, a solo shot to straight-away center field. In the sixth, the Terps put the game on ice with three runs with two outs, capped by a two-run home run from Shannon Bustillos.

After a big day at the plate on Saturday, the Hokies couldn’t put together the big rally on Sunday, scattering seven hits – two from Gonzalez and one apiece from Dani Anderson, Katey Smith, Amanda Ake, Kat Banks and Bailey Liddle. The Hokies struck out just once in the game, but grounded out 10 times and flew or popped out nine times.

Maggie Tyler (L, 14-6) got the start and lasted 2.2 innings. She allowed three runs on five hits with three strikeouts. Kelly Heinz went 3.0 innings, giving up five runs (three earned) on five hits with two walks and three strikeouts. Elizabeth Birle got the final out of the game.

Tech still won the series thanks to a sweep of the doubleheader on Saturday. The Terps moved to 6-32 overall, 4-13 in the ACC with the win while the Hokies fell to 30-17 overall, 18-7 in the league.

The loss ended Tech’s 13-game ACC winning streak and 11-game overall winning streak.

Tech will step out of conference for a Wednesday doubleheader on the road at Longwood (31-12; 71 RPI) that begins at 5 p.m. in Farmville, Va.
