COLLEGE PARK, Md. – The Virginia Tech softball team took both games of the doubleheader from the University of Maryland Saturday at Maryland Softball Stadium to extend its winning streak to 11 games. The Hokies won the first game 3-0 and then rallied late to take the second game 8-6 in a wild affair.

In the opener, the Hokies got a gem of a performance from sophomore pitcher Kelly Heinz as the Hokies won 3-0. Heinz (W, 15-11) tossed a one-hit shutout with just one walk and five strikeouts as she retired the final 13 batters of the game.

The Hokies got on the board in the second inning when Bailey Liddle drove in Logan Spaw with a two-out single to the gap. Tech made it 2-0 in the second inning when Kylie McGoldrick got in a run-down between first and second base to allow Lauren Gaskill to pilfer home. The final run came in the fifth inning when Gaskill scored on Katey Smith’s sacrifice fly.

McGoldrick and Liddle both had two hits while Gaskill, Spaw, Dani Anderson and Vanessa Gonzalez each had one.

In the second game, the Hokies jumped all over starter Brenna Nation, putting the first five runners on to force a pitching change. Maryland’s Madison Martin got two infield flies, but Spaw doubled to the gap with the bases loaded to plate three runs and make it 4-0.

Maryland battled back with two runs in the first inning and one more in the fourth inning, but a botched squeeze play by the Terps led to an inning-ending double play for the Hokies. In the fifth inning, the Terps got a hit and a walk off Maggie Tyler, forcing a change for the Hokies. Heinz came in and gave up a three-run home run to the first batter she saw as Maryland took its first lead of the day.

In the sixth inning, Banks got a one-out walk and scored from first base on Gaskill’s double to the gap to cut the lead to one. McGoldrick came through with a sac fly to plate Gaskill and tie it up. In the seventh inning, Ake drew a two-out walk and came around to score from first base on Spaw’s double to the gap. One pitch later, Liddle singled up the middle to score pinch runner Laura Wolff to give Tech a two-run lead and complete the comeback.

In the bottom of the seventh, Heinz got a pair of fly outs before giving up a two out walk. The next batter, Kylie Datil, ripped a double to the right-center gap and Maryland coach Laura Watten sent Juli Strange all the way. But a perfect relay from Kat Banks to McGoldrick to Smith cut down Strange at home and ended the game.

Tyler went 4.1 innings, allowing five runs on six hits with two walks and two strikeouts. Heinz (W, 16-11) went the final 2.2 innings to pick up the win. She allowed a run on five hits with two walks and a strikeout.

Gonzalez, Liddle, Spaw (4 RBIs) and Gaskill led the way with two hits apiece while McGoldrick, Smith and Banks each had one.

With the sweep, Tech has now won 13 straight ACC games to take over second place in the conference and ran its overall winning streak to 11 games. The Hokies are now 30-16, 18-6 in the ACC while Maryland is 5-32, 3-13 in the conference.

The two teams will play the final game of the series on Sunday at 1 p.m.
