BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech softball team continued its recent hot streak, taking a pair of games from the University of Virginia Saturday at Tech Softball Park, winning 8-2 and 6-0 in front of a season-high crowd of 873 to run its ACC winning streak to 10 games.

In the opener, the Hokies pounded out 11 hits and eight runs in cruising to the easy win. In the second inning, pinch runner Cailey Isaacs and Bailey Liddle scored on Lauren Gaskill’s single before Gaskill scored on Kylie McGoldrick’s double. The Cavs struck for two runs in the third inning on a home run, but the Hokies would end the game with five unanswered runs.

Liddle cranked a solo home run in the fourth inning to make it 4-2. In the fifth inning, Logan Spaw drove in Katey Smith and Dani Anderson with a single down the line and in the sixth inning, Gaskill tripled before she was driven in by McGoldrick and then McGoldrick scored on an error.

Kelly Heinz (W, 14-11) went the distance, allowing two runs on four hits with two walks and six strikeouts.

Gaskill led the way at the plate with three hits, while McGoldrick, Spaw and Liddle all had two. Smith and Anderson both had one.

In the second game, the Hokies jumped on the board in the second inning when Smith launched a solo home run down the line. The scored remained 1-0 until the fifth inning when the Hokies scored five unearned runs to bust it open. Gaskill and McGoldrick both scored on Smith’s triple to the gap and she scored on Spaw’s double. Pinch runner Toni Erwin eventually scored on Vanessa Gonzalez’s single. Gonzalez scored the last run of the inning on a passed ball.

Tyler (W, 12-5) was dominant in the circle for the Hokies, tossing seven shutout innings. The sophomore set a new career high with 10 strikeouts and allowed just four hits no walks.

Smith and Gonzalez both had two hits to lead the way while Gaskill, McGoldrick, Spaw and Liddle each had one.

With the sweep, Tech moved to 26-16 overall, 15-6 in the ACC while Virginia fell to 6-34, 1-18 in the conference. The Hokies have now won 10 straight ACC games, setting a new program record. The 2008 team won nine consecutive ACC games, which was the previous mark. The overall record for consecutive conference wins is 14, set in 1999 when Tech played in the Atlantic 10.

The two teams will wrap up the three-game series on Sunday with a single game at 1 p.m. Tech’s four seniors – Amanda Ake, Anderson, Kat Banks and Laura Wolff – will be honored before the game.
