ORLANDO, Fla. – The Virginia Tech softball team split a pair of games Saturday at the UCF Spring Fling, falling to South Alabama 3-2 before coming back to down Florida A&M, 9-1 in five innings.

After a tough loss in the first game, the Hokies bounced back to take care of business against Florida A&M. While the Lady Rattlers scored a run in the first inning, Tech responded in a big way with six runs in the second inning.

Courtney Liddle doubled and scored on Betty Rose’s single and then Kristen Froehlich and Rose both scored on Marra Hvozdovic’s single. After that, FAMU committed four errors that led to three more unearned runs for the Hokies.

Tech struck for three more runs in the fourth inning to make it 9-1. Dani Anderson tripled and scored on a wild pitch and Liddle scored on Rose’s double to the gap. Froehlich scored later in the inning on Hvozdovic’s single to left field.

For the game, Liddle, Rose and Hvozdovic each had two hits to lead the way. Anderson, Froehlich and Kelsey Hensel each had one. Jasmin Harrell (W, 4-1) went the full five innings, allowing one run on six hits with two walks and seven strikeouts.

In the opener, Tech jumped out to a quick lead, drawing four walks to plate a run. Rose drew the last one to pick up the RBI. In the third inning, Richelle McGarva scored on an error to make it 2-0. That’s the way it stayed until the sixth inning when USA struck for three runs to come back and pick up the win. The Jaguars got two hits and Tech committed two errors to help the cause.

Kenzie Roark (L, 8-2) took the loss. She went 6.0 innings, allowing three runs (one earned) on six hits with two walks and four strikeouts. The Hokies had just four hits, one apiece from McGarva, Rose, Liddle and Stephanie Kujawa. Tech struck out 10 times, seven of them looking.

Despite the split on the day, Tech (14-4) still advances to Sunday’s championship game, where it will face South Alabama again at 11 a.m.
