Six former Virginia Tech softball players or coaches all made headlines in the past four months for their work in the coaching ranks. Here’s a look at what’s gone on with them after they’ve left Blacksburg.

Clarisa Crowell - Crowell was just recently named the head coach at Miami University in Ohio. You can read the release here. She previously served as the pitching coach at Oklahoma State University, helping the Cowgirls to an appearance in the 2011 WCWS. Crowell played at tech from 1999-2002 and hit .289 for her career with 16 home runs and 35 doubles while also going 65-25 in the circle with a 1.39 ERA and 475 strikeouts.

Charisse Mariconda - Mariconda, who was a star at third base for the Hokies, was recently named the assistant coach at Fordham University in New York. She spent the past two seasons as the volunteer assistant at Radford University. Mariconda batted .312 for her career at Tech (2006-09) with 17 home runs, 47 doubles, eight triples and 52 stolen bases. She was a starter for the 2008 squad that advanced to the WCWS.

Tiffany McVay - McVay, who was the pitching coach at Virginia Tech from 2007-08, was part of the Division III national championship staff at Pacific Lutheran. The staff was named the NFCA Division III National Coaching Staff of the Year, as well as the West Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Lutheran went 45-11 on the year and culminated the season with the program’s first NCAA Division III national crown.

Kenzie Roark - Roark, one of Tech’s all-time winningest pitchers, was named the full-time pitching coach at East Tennessee State University in August. Here’s the release. She was a fifth-year student assistant with the Hokies last season as Tech advanced to the NCAA Regional finals and the staff was named the NFCA’s Mid-Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year.

Kelsey (Hoffman) Schmitt - Schmitt (previously Kelsey Hoffman) helped Roanoke College to a fourth-place finish at the Division III National Championship and the team’s first ODAC crown since 2006. The staff was named the NFCA Division III Atlantic Region Coaching Staff of the Year. Schmitt just completed her first year on the coaching staff and assisted with player development, practice planning, scouting and recruiting. Schmitt was Tech’s starting catcher for the WCWS team, hitting .242 with 70 RBIs for her career, and is married to former Tech punter Nic Schmitt, who is a firefighter in Salem, Va.

Monica “Mo” Triner - Triner, who was Tech’s pitching coach from 2001-03, returned to her alma mater USF after leaving Blacksburg. This past season, she led a strong Bulls pitching staff and helped USF to its first appearance in the WCWS. The staff was named the Division I NFCA Mideast Region Coaching Staff of the Year.
