BLACKSBURG – Cornerback Kyle Fuller returned an interception for a touchdown and reserve quarterback Trey Gresh threw a touchdown pass to headline Virginia Tech’s scrimmage on Saturday at Lane Stadium.

Tech’s defense dominated most of the action in the scrimmage, intercepting two passes and recording 11 sacks, though nearly all of those sacks came against the second- and third-team offensive units. Statistically, Alonzo Tweedy led the way with five solo tackles, including 2.5 for a loss, and 1.5 sacks. Derek DiNardo had three tackles, including one for a loss, and two assists. Dadi Nicolas had two sacks, and Luther Maddy had 1.5 sacks.

Ronny Vandyke and Fuller had the lone interceptions.

“We were playing a lot of different combinations out there, but we were playing fast, and I’m pleased with the way we’re progressing,” defensive coordinator Bud Foster said. “We’re developing some depth up front. We have some depth issues at linebacker, but Jack Tyler, Chase Williams and Brian Laiti are playing well, and we’ve got some young guys in the secondary. But Ronny [Vandyke], [Donaldven] Manning, and Theron Norman did some nice things.

“I like the way we’re going. We’re playing hard, and we’ve been pretty consistent for the most part.”

Offensively, Logan Thomas completed 3 of 12 for 53 yards and the one interception in which Fuller returned for a touchdown. Mark Leal completed 4 of 12 for 46 yards and an interception. Marcus Davis and Christian Reeves each caught three passes, with Davis’ going for 56 yards and Reeves’ going for 43.

On the ground, Martin Scales led the way with four carries for 26 yards, while J.C. Coleman carried six times for 14 yards.

“I thought we did some nice things, though it probably didn’t seem that way,” offensive coordinator Bryan Stinespring said. “We made some progress, but we’re not where we need to be. I think we’ve got a chance. We’ve all just got to stay on the same path and keep improving.”

The lone score by the offense came toward the end of the scrimmage. Gresh threw a 22-yard touchdown pass to David Mellstrom, who beat Nick Bush on the play.

On special teams, Kyshoen Jarrett returned a punt 88 yards for a touchdown, though the officials blew the whistle to stop the play well before Jarrett reached the end zone. Also, kicker Conor Goulding connected on a 36-yard field goal, but also missed from 36 yards out.

The Hokies’ next scrimmage is slated for next Saturday at 10:45 in Lane Stadium. The scrimmage is open to the public.
