Tech falters versus Radford at Calfee Park

PULAKSI, Va. – The Virginia Tech baseball team scheduled two games of the 2016 season at historic Calfee Park and in the first of them took place there on Wednesday night with the Radford Highlanders getting the better of the Hokies and winning the nonconference contest, 5-1.

Radford used a three-run bottom of the second to break a 1-1 tie and held Tech scoreless the rest of the way to secure the win.

Keeping Radford close in the later frames were Connor Coward (3.0 innings pitched, one earned run, three strikeouts) and Nic Enright, who retired all nine batters he faced. At one point, he struck out five straight batters which including striking out the side in the eighth.

Highlanders’ Tyler Swarmer improved to 2-2 this season with the win, while Culver Hughes, who made his first career start for Tech, suffered the loss and is 0-1.

How the runs were scored

  • Radford (9-24) took a 1-0 lead in the first on a two-out RBI single by Jonathan Gonzalez that scored Danny Hrbek from second.
  • Tech (11-23) knotted the game in the top of the second thanks to a pair of Radford errors. Ryan Tufts reached base on a throwing error by first baseman Jordan Taylor and with two outs, scored on a fielding error by Taylor off the bat of Rahiem Cooper.
  • The Highlanders used a two-out rally to score three runs in the home half of the second; the key hit was a two-run, home run by Shane Johnsonbaugh, his fifth of the year.
  • They tacked on an insurance run in the fifth with Trevor Riggs, who doubled, scoring from third on a grounder to short by Taylor.

  • Saige Jenco: started game with a hit-by-pitch, the fifth straight game he has reached base to leadoff the Hokies in the first.
  • Phil Sciretta: single in the third, four hits shy of 100 for his Tech career; 2 at-bats, pushes career total to 299; 2 walks, ties career high (done four other times).
  • Garrett Hudson: single in the fourth, a personal best fifth straight game with a hit.
  • Coward: 3.0 IP, season and career high as a reliever; 3 strikeouts, ties season high.
  • Enright: 5 strikeouts, ties season high (last, over 7.0 IP vs. Quinnipiac, March 5); struck out the side in 8th, first time in his career; 3 perfect frames, 10 for the season; 3 scoreless innings, 16 for the season.

The Hokies open up the second half of the ACC slate welcoming Pitt to English Field at Union Park. The three-game series gets underway on Friday with first pitch scheduled for 5:30 p.m.
