ATLANTA – In the final game of a three-game baseball series at Russ Chandler Stadium Sunday afternoon, the No. 22 Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets used an eight-run outburst over the middle three frames to break open the contest against Virginia Tech and then held on for a 16-8 victory.
The Hokies had trailed by nine entering the seventh and scored a single run in the frame, and then plated six more in the eighth – the key hit a three-RBI double by Ryan Tufts – that pulled them to within four at 12-8, but they would get no closer.
GT relief pitcher Micah Carpenter earned the win on the mound for the Yellow Jackets and is now 1-0. Hokie starter Jon Woodcock was saddled with the loss and falls to 1-4.
How the runs were scored
- Georgia Tech (15-4, 3-3 ACC) opened the scoring in the first, as three straight singles – the last by Kel Johnson that scored Connor Justus – gave the team its first run.
- Ryan Peurifoy gave the Yellow Jackets a 2-0 lead after doubling in the second and scoring on a wild pitch.
- Virginia Tech (10-11, 1-5 ACC) cut its deficit in half with a single run in the third. Matt Dauby doubled with one out and Saige Jenco, with a two-out double, brought him home.
- The Yellow Jackets padded their lead, though, to 10-1 by the end of the sixth inning, after scoring a single run in the fourth, three in the fifth and four in the sixth – on a grand slam by Johnson.
- The Hokies used a RBI single by Dauby in the seventh to make it 10-2, then sent 10 men to the plate in the eighth, scoring six runs, to cut their deficit to 12-8. With the bases loaded, Tufts hit a bases-clearing double to spark the rally and Garrett Hudson, Jenco and Max Ponzurick then all collected an RBI in the frame to finish their scoring.
- Georgia Tech plated four more runs in the bottom of the frame to put the game away.
