BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech baseball team ran its winning streak to six straight games with a doubleheader sweep of the visiting Quinnipiac Bobcats on Saturday afternoon in nonconference action at English Field. The Hokies ran away with the win in the first game, 13-4, but needed a run in the bottom of the ninth to take the second, 4-3.
Tom Stoffel enjoyed a 4 for 7 day at the plate, with three doubles and a home run, and added three RBIs, while Nick Anderson also had four hits and four RBIs. It was Saige Jenco, though, that scored the game-winning run in the ninth of game two on a wild pitch that enabled the Hokies to remain unbeaten at home this season (5-0).
Kit Scheetz improved to 3-0 on the mound with the win in game one, with Joey Sullivan earning his first career save. Aaron McGarity picked up his second win of the year in game two. Robert Hitt (0-1) and Matthew Lorenzetti (0-2) suffered the losses for Quinnipiac.
How the runs were scored – Game 1
- Tech (8-3) scored a pair in the first with Stoffel knocking in Jenco with a double then came home on a groundball off the bat of Phil Sciretta.
- The Bobcats (3-4) used a walk, a hit-by-pitch and a double steal to put runners on second and third with no outs. Matthew Batten followed with a sacrifice fly and a grounder by Louis Iannotti tied the game at 2-2.
- The Hokies answered back with three runs in the third – Max Ponzurick scored on a Nick Anderson single and a Matt Dauby two-run home run – and two in the fourth – Stoffel solo home run and Anderson RBI single.
- Tech blew the game open with a five-spot in the seventh, Jenco, Ryan Tufts and Max Ponzurick all knocking in one run and Anderson got two more with a double.
How the runs were scored – Game 2
- Stoffel did it again in the first, this time an RBI double that scored Tufts put the Hokies up 1-0.
- Dauby and Tufts would knock in single runs in the fourth and seventh respectively to increase the Hokie advantage to 3-0.
- Quinnipiac used a three-spot in the ninth to tie the game with the key hit a two-RBI single by Iannotti that knotted the game at 3-3.
- The Hokies loaded the bases in the bottom of the frame on a Jenco double, and back-to-back walks to Tufts and Stoffel. Jenco scored from third on a wild pitch to end the game.
Inside the Boxes
- In G1, Stoffel scored a career-high four runs, had his fourth multi-hit game of the season and now leads the team with four multi-RBI games. He also hit his first collegiate home run. He also notched his fourth career outfield assist.
- Sciretta extending his hitting streak to 11 games with a hit in both contests. His two-hit game in G1 gave him a team-high seven multi-hit games this season, while also adding his second multi-RBI game of the year by knocking in two runs.
- Ponzurick scored at least two runs for the fourth time this season, with his two runs in G1, while notching his fourth multi-hit game of the year. He also recorded his second outfield assist of the season.
- Anderson had a career-high four hits and four RBIs in the first game.
- Dauby had two runs (third multi-run scoring game), two hits (fourth multi-hit game) and two RBIs (second multi-RBI game) in the first game and also hit his second home run of the season.
- Jenco had three hits in the second game, the 17th time in his Tech career he’s had at least three hits.
- Scheetz is the first pitcher since Devin Burke (2013) to win his first three starts of the season.
- Sullivan earned the first save of his collegiate career.
- Nic Enright tossed a season-high seven scoreless innings and struck out five batters. He retired 16 straight batters and, after a leadoff single to start the game, did not allow another hit the rest of the game, retiring 21 of 22 (only other batter reached on an error).
- Anderson also threw a perfect inning of relief in the eighth of G2.
- McGarity struck out the side in the ninth, the fourth time he’s done that this season.
Additional Notes
- The Hokies turned two double plays behind Scheetz and have eight this season.
- Since 2010, Tech has hosted four-game weekends eight times and has now won seven of them.
- This was the first doubleheader sweep for the Hokies since March 15, 2014, when they beat Pittsburgh in a pair of games.
- The walk-off win was the 10th for the Hokies under head coach Patrick Mason.
- Tech ended a two-game losing streak on this date, but are now 16-12 overall.
- In 2012, the Hokies started the season with eight straight wins at English Field.
- During the second game, the Hokies combined to retire 20 straight batters before the Bobcat rally.
