Novotna wins Atlantic Region singles title
Tech sophomore to represent Hokies at ITA Fall National Championships

BLACKSBURG – Virginia Tech women’s tennis sophomore Natalie Novotna has claimed the 2017 ITA Atlantic Region singles title on Tuesday afternoon at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.
Novotna opened the day with an impressive shutout of William & Mary’s Clara Tanielian, defeating the Tribe player 6-0, 6-0 in the semifinals. On the other side of the bracket, Elena Cerezo-Codina faced UVA’s 34th-ranked Rosie Johanson, falling to the Cavalier 6-3, 6-1 to set-up a Tech/UVA final.
In the finals, Novotna rolled to a first set 6-1 win over Johanson. Novotna led 5-1 in the second set, but Johanson crept back in, winning three straight games to close it to 5-4. With UVA on serve, Novotna broke to secure the win 6-4.
With the win, Novotna punches her ticket to the ITA Fall National Championships. The event will be held Nov. 1-5, 2017 in California.
