Virginia Tech hosts 2017 ITA Atlantic Regional Championships

BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team is set to open the 2017 ITA Women’s Tennis Atlantic Region Championships on Friday, beginning with the qualifying singles and main draw doubles at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg, Virginia.

Virginia Tech is hosting competitors from 24 teams around the region including: Delaware, Duquesne, George Washington, Georgetown, Hampton, Howard, James Madison, Liberty, Longwood, Marshall, Maryland, Mount St. Mary’s, Navy, Old Dominion, Penn State, Pitt, Radford, Richmond, St. Joseph’s, Towson, VCU, Virginia, West Virginia and William & Mary.

Taking the court for the Hokies on Friday in the single qualifying rounds are Nina Sorkin, Shene Disbergen, Luisa Uscocovich, Nancy Ghanem and Katherine Butler.

Tech will also take the court on Friday in the main draw doubles with 3rd-seed Caroline Daxhelet and Natalia Novotna leading the way; while Elena Cerezo-Codina and Nina Sorkin will pair up as the 5th-seed.

Other Hokies’ duos are Sarah Baron/Disbergen and Butler/Nika Kozar.

Tech will begin main draw singles on Saturday as Novotna enters the field seeded second. Cerezo-Codina is the seventh seed while Daxhelet ic the 10th-seed. Kozar will also begin singles action in the main draw.

The field features five competitors ranked in the preseason ITA standings including Virginia Tech’s Novotna at 56th, Old Dominion's Holly Hutchinson at 58th and UVA’s Rosie Johanson, Cassie Mercer and Meghan Kelley who are 34th, 74th and 124th, respectively. Maryland’s duo of Eva Alexandrova and Ekaterina Tour are 58th in doubles.

ITA Schedule is as follows:
Friday - 2 rounds of singles qualifying; Round of 64 doubles
Saturday - Round of 32 and 16 doubles; Round of 64 Main draw singles
Sunday - Quarterfinals of doubles, Round of 32 and 16 Singles
Monday - Semifinals of doubles, Quarterfinals of Singles, Doubles Finals
Tuesday - Semi and Finals of Singles

Competition will begin at 9 a.m. each day.
Main draw singles matches will start on Saturday not before 11:30 a.m.
