Junior Elena Cerezo-Codina placed second at the 2016 Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic, as the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team completed its fall slate at two different tournaments on Sunday.
A native of Almeria, Spain, No. 94 Cerezo-Codina fell short in the final round of competition, as Florida’s No. 43 Anna Danilina defeated Cerezo-Codina in straight sets (6-3, 6-4) at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida. Cerezo-Codina won four singles victories throughout three days of competition, including an upset win over Ohio State’s No. 80 Olivia Sneed to advance to the finals.
Additionally, select Hokies competed in singles action against Memphis in the third and final day of the Louisville Tennis Classic, held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, in Louisville, Kentucky.
The Hokies tallied two-of-six singles victories on the day, as freshmen Nancy Ghanem and Luisa Uscocovich each claimed one match apiece. Ghanem defeated Memphis’ Gabrielle Paul in straight sets (6-1, 6-4), while Uscocovich knocked off Memphis’ Clara Kuehn in a three-set battle (6-1, 2-6, 6-3).
Virginia Tech resumes competition in January. The Hokies will open their 2017 spring schedule with a doubleheader at home against Troy and Longwood on Saturday, Jan. 21.
