Cerezo-Codina advances at the Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic
Elena Cerezo-Codina won two singles matches today, advancing to tomorrow's finals

Junior Elena Cerezo-Codina of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team advanced to the singles finals at the 2016 Dick Vitale Intercollegiate Clay Court Classic on Saturday, at the Lakewood Ranch Golf and Country Club, in Lakewood Ranch, Florida.
A native of Almeria, Spain, No. 94 Cerezo-Codina knocked off East Tennessee State’s Marina Espana in a quarterfinal matchup by a score of 6-3, 6-3, before upsetting Ohio State’s Olivia Sneed in the semifinals. Cerezo-Codina cruised past No. 80 Sneed in straight sets (6-2, 6-4) to advance to the final round of competition. Cerezo-Codina will compete against Florida’s No. 43 Anna Danilina on Sunday at 10 a.m.
“I love Florida,” Cerezo-Codina. “the weather has been beautiful, and I like playing on the clay courts. I have been playing very well, and I am very excited for tomorrow. The team also has been playing very well, and our coaches have been doing a great job teaching us. I am confident going into tomorrow’s matchup.”
In doubles action, the duo of junior Caroline Daxhelet and Cerezo-Codina dropped a hard-fought battle to Florida’s No. 37 Spencer Liang and Danilina, falling by a score of 8-3 in a semifinal matchup.
Additionally, select Hokies competed at the Louisville Tennis Classic, held at the Bass-Rudd Tennis Center, in Louisville, Kentucky.
Of note, freshman Fallon Delp picked up a 3-6, 7-6 (3), 1-0 (11-9) decision over Memphis’ Clara Kuehn for Tech’s lone victory of the day at the Louisville Tennis Classic.
