Hokies conclude play at the ITA All-American
Tech returns to the court next week, as the team competes at the ITA Regionals

The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team concluded play in the main singles and doubles consolation brackets on Friday, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women’s All-American Championships, in Pacific Palisades, California.

“Overall, it was a great tournament for our team,” said head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “With each match they played, they continued to represent our university and program in a very positive way. At this level, every match is tough. The difference is sometimes just a point, so we will continue to work hard in our practices and know that the results will take care of itself throughout the process.”

In singles play, No. 42 Francesca Fusinato advanced to the second round of the main consolation bracket, as Stanford’s No. 22 Taylor Davidson defaulted. Fusinato, who earned a spot in the main singles draw when the selections were first released on Sept. 13, fell to Miami’s No. 3 Sinead Lohan in the quarterfinal round of competition by a score of 6-3, 6-3.

In doubles action, the Hokie duo of Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet dropped an 8-3 decision to Alabama’s No. 34 Erin Routliffe and Andie Daniell in the main consolation bracket. Of note, the Alabama pairing won the doubles championship title at the 2016 ITF 10k LTP Charleston Tournament on Oct. 1.

Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet was the first doubles tandem in program history to qualify for the main doubles draw at the ITA All-American. The junior pairing recorded three victories over the course of two days, including an 8-6 upset over Illinois’ No. 25 Louise Kwong and Ines Vias. Tech was one-of-four teams in a 32-team field that advanced to the main event.

The Hokies will return to the court next week, as the team travels to Norfolk, Virginia, to compete in the ITA Regionals from Oct. 14-18.
