The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell short in the opening rounds of the main singles and doubles draws on Thursday, at the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women’s All-American Championships, in Pacific Palisades, California.

“They were tough matches for our team today, but still so many positives to take from the day,” said head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “with each match we play, we look to learn and improve, and we are looking forward to competing again tomorrow.”

After qualifying for the main doubles draw for the first time in program history, the junior duo of Elena Cerezo-Codina and Caroline Daxhelet stumbled against Washington’s No. 13 Nour Abbes and Miki Kobayashi by a score of 8-1.

No. 42 Francesca Fusinato earned a spot in the main singles draw when the selections were first released on Sept. 13, but dropped a 6-2, 6-0 decision to Ohio State’s No. 3 Francesca Di Lorenzo in the opening round of the tournament.

The tournament resumes tomorrow at the Riviera Tennis Club, as Fusinato and the Hokie duo will compete in the main consolation brackets.

Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet faces Alabama’s No. 34 Erin Routliffe and Andie Daniell in the consolation doubles bracket at 12 p.m. ET, while Fusinato takes on Stanford’s No. 22 Taylor Davidson in the consolation singles bracket at 3:30 p.m. ET.
