No. 96 Daxhelet recorded two upset victories in the qualifying singles bracket, defeating Northwestern’s No. 30 Maddie Lipp in round one and Clemson’s No. 46 Ayan Broomfield in round two.

“To get two top 50 wins is never easy, and I am proud of Caroline for earning those big wins today,” said head coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods.

In the opening round, the Arlon, Belgium, native defeated Lipp in a hard-fought, three-set battle. Daxhelet captured the first set, but dropped the second. She then prevailed in set three to claim the match by a score of 6-4, 5-7, 6-2. Daxhelet also came out on top in the second round of competition, tallying a 3-6, 6-4, 6-3 decision over Broomfield.

“Caroline really showed great composure and fight in two great matches,” Zawacki-Woods said. “She played terrific tennis today, and I am excited to her compete in the next round tomorrow.”

Following two upset wins, Daxhelet advanced to the round of 16 set for tomorrow at 2:45 p.m. ET. She will square off against South Carolina’s No. 55 Ingrid Gamarra Martins, as the top eight players in the qualifying bracket will advance to the main singles draw. The main event will be held over a four-day span, as the top 32 players from across the country will battle for the 2016 Riviera/ITA All-American singles crown.

In doubles action, the duo of junior Elena Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet bested Illinois’ No. 25 Louise Kwong and Ines Vias in the first round of the qualifying doubles bracket (8-6).

“Caroline and Elena have showed so much improvement in doubles, and I was proud of how they composed themselves in tight situations,” Zawaki-Woods said.

The doubles tandem will take on Tennessee’s Sadie Hammond and Eve Repic in the round of 16 on Wednesday, at 1 p.m. ET. The top four teams will advance to the main doubles draw, where the final 32 doubles tandems will compete for the 2016 Riviera ITA All-American doubles title. The main event will begin on Thursday, Oct. 6.

“Today was a pretty good day for me,” Daxhelet said. “I started with doubles, and I won with Elena (Cerezo-Codina), 8-6, against the 25th-ranked (doubles) team in the nation. It was good. Then I had two singles matches. I won in three sets against the 30th ranked player in the nation. It was a good one. I had one more match to go, and I won again against No. 48. It was a pretty good day. It was very tiring, but overall, it was good.”

Of note, No. 94 Cerezo-Codina fell in a three-set battle to Pepperdine’s No. 48 Mayar Sherif Ahmed by a score of 3-6, 6-3, 6-4. Cerezo-Codina captured the first set, but could not overcome Ahmed in the final two sets to claim the victory in the first round of the qualifying singles bracket. Cerezo-Codina then suffered a 6-4, 6-0 setback to Ole Miss’s No. 81 Tea Jandric in the consolation singles bracket.

The tournament, hosted by the Riviera Tennis Club, will resume tomorrow at 1 p.m. ET.
