BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team concluded play at the UNCW Fall Invitational on Sunday, adding three doubles and seven singles victories to its resume at the UNCW Courts, in Wilmington, North Carolina.
The Hokies squared off against Coastal Carolina in doubles, picking up three-of-four doubles matches over the Chanticleers. In the afternoon session vs. Charlotte, Tech also walked away with seven-of-eight singles victories over the 49ers.
“The matches went really well today, especially for me in singles and doubles,” said senior Sansitha Nandakumar. “I came back from yesterdays loses, and I ran for all the balls. I was attacking, and I was playing my game. I played aggressive.
"As a team, I think we came in today’s matches ready to go. We only had one lost in singles, but everyone played really well. It was a great experience, and it was a good tournament overall.”
In singles action, freshman Shene Disbergen defeated CHA’s Victoria Pahlett in straight sets by a score of 6-4, 6-1. Nandakumar also bested CHA’s Macy Vonderschmidt in straight sets (6-2, 6-2).
Junior Sarah Baron toppled CHA’s Pierina Imparato in straight sets (6-4, 6-3), while junior Katherine Butler routed CHA’s Alexandra Lee with a first-set tiebreaker (7-6 (6), 6-4).
Freshman Luisa Uscocovich claimed a 6-1, 6-1 decision over CHA’s Megan Smith, and classmate McKenzie Collins picked up a 6-3, 6-1 victory over CHA’s Kelly Dodd.
Junior Sloan Barton rounded out the Hokie lineup with a three-set match. Baron claimed the first set, but dropped the second. She then prevailed in set three to claim the victory (7-5, 5-7, 10-7).
This week, senior Francesca Fusinato and juniors Caroline Daxhelet and Elena Cerezo-Codina will travel to Pacific Palisades, California, to compete in the Intercollegiate Tennis Association (ITA) Women’s All-American Championships held on Oct. 1-9.
For the first time in her career, Fusinato will participate in the main singles draw. Cerezo-Codina and Daxhelet also will compete in the qualifying singles bracket. The official tournament brackets will be announced on Monday, Oct. 4.
