BLACKSBURG - The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team started play at the UNCW Fall Invitational on Saturday with one round of doubles and one set of singles matches after opening-day action was cancelled on Friday due to inclement weather.

The Hokies opened doubles action by splitting four matches against Charlotte. Tech won the bottom-two positions in the four-match series against the Hokies.

Freshmen Shene Disbergen and McKenzie Collins cruised past CHA’s Immie Cowper and Macy Vonderschmidt, 6-4, to claim their first doubles match in Hokie uniform. Junior Sloan Barton and freshman Luisa Uscocovich also defeated CHA’s Briana Bodner and Kelly Dodd by a score of 6-3.

“It was my first day competing for Virginia Tech, and it was awesome,” Disbergen said with a smile. “Doubles was great. I played with McKenzie, and it started out very well. It was a little close at the end, but we maintained our game. It worked for us. I have to give credit to my doubles partner for hitting this great, backhand volley too. That was a good way to start the day.”

In singles action, the Hokies claimed two-of-eight singles matches against UNC Wilmington. Freshman Nancy Ghanem bested UNCW’s Alix Theodossiou in straight sets (6-4, 6-3). Disbergen also toppled UNCW’s Laura Gomez in straight sets by a score of 7-6 (5), 6-3.

“Singles was a battle, but it was a good one,” Disbergen noted. “I started off slow tonight, but I eventually loosened up and got in my groove. I played my game again. It was a good match. My opponent was a good competitor. It was good tennis throughout the whole day. My team did well, and our attitude was good.”

The tournament will conclude on Sunday, as the Hokies take on UNCW in doubles action, followed by singles matches against Coastal Carolina in the afternoon.
