BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team travels to Wilmington, North Carolina, to compete at the UNCW Fall Invitational from Sept. 30 – Oct. 2, at the UNCW Courts.
The three-day event is round-robin style, and includes competition from Campbell, Coastal Carolina, UNC Charlotte, UNC Greensboro and host UNC Wilmington. Matches are set to begin at 9 a.m. each day, with the exception of an 8:30 a.m. start time on Saturday.
Senior Sansitha Nandakumar, juniors Katherine Butler, Sarah Baron and Sloan Barton and freshmen Shene Disbergen, Nancy Fawzy, McKenzie Collins and Luisa Uscocovich will play in the Hokie lineup this weekend.
“It’s been a great few weeks of practice, and I’ve been impressed with the progress our team has been making,” said coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “I’m anxious to see how our team responds to match play and to watch them put all they’ve learned from practices into play this weekend.”
On Friday, Virginia Tech will square off against Charlotte in singles action at 9 a.m., followed by an afternoon doubles session vs. Campbell at 5 p.m.
Play resumes on Saturday morning with a doubles session vs. Charlotte and Coastal Carolina. The Hokies will conclude day two in the afternoon, as they take on host UNC Wilmington in singles action at 2 p.m.
Tech wraps up the third and final day of the tournament on Sunday. The Hokies will take on UNC Wilmington in doubles at 9 a.m., followed by a battle against Coastal Carolina in singles action at 10:15 a.m.
Last week, the Hokies opened their fall season at the UVa Fall Invitational in Charlottesville, Virginia, from Sept. 23-25. Junior Caroline Daxhelet placed fifth in the Blue Singles Flight, tallying three-out-of-four singles victories over the course of three days.
Of note, junior Elena Cerezo-Codina and freshman Natalie Novotna also competed at the International Tennis Federation (ITF) Pro Circuit, in Charleston, South Carolina.
On Sept. 27, the doubles tandem of Cerezo-Codina and Novotna cruised past USA’s Liza Fieldsend and Joelle Kissell by a score of 6-3, 6-3 to qualify for the main doubles draw. The duo then dropped a 6-4, 6-1 decision to USA’s Jaeda Daniel and Ingrid Neel in the first round of the main doubles draw on Wednesday. In the main singles draw, Novotna fell to No. 592 Lauren Embree in straight sets, 7-5, 6-4, in the first round of the tournament on Sept. 27.
