Daxhelet finishes fifth at UVA Fall Invite
Junior Caroline Daxhelet placed fifth in the Blue Singles Flight, defeating Maryland's Alexandra Stanova

BLACKSBURG – Highlighted by junior Caroline Daxhelet’s fifth place finish in the Blue Singles Flight, the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team closed competition at the Virginia Fall Invitational, on Sunday, in Charlottesville, Virginia.

Weather forced play indoors to the Boar’s Head Sports Club, and as a result, matches shifted to eight-game pro set scoring with the exception of the finals matches.

“We had a rocky start to the tournament, but we grew throughout every match,” said assistant coach Will Davis. “They took what they learned from one match and brought it into the next. That’s what these fall tournaments are all about. They kept fighting, and they showed great effort all weekend. They are going to be even better at the next tournament, and the tournament after that, they will be incredible.”

Daxhelet cruised past Maryland’s Alexandra Stanova by a score of 8-5 and claimed fifth place in the Blue Singles Flight.

“It was a good weekend,” Daxhelet said. “We played a lot of matches at a high level. I improved in every match, and it was a good weekend overall.

“I didn’t play a lot over the last two months, so it’s good to be back at it and play more points. When you play matches, it is a lot different from practices. It is nice to play against good players from all over the country. I played aggressive and smart. I improved in every match, so I’m happy with it.”

Sophomore Emily Pence dropped an 8-4 decision to Maryland’s Cassandra Thebault, while freshman Fallon Delp fell to South Carolina’s (8-3) in singles action.

In doubles action, the duo of Pence and Delp stumbled against the combo team of Marshall’s Daniela Dankanych and South Carolina’s Brigit Folland (6-2), placing fourth in the White Doubles Flight consolation bracket.

Of note, junior Sarah Baron withdrew from singles and doubles action today.

Additionally, junior Elena Cerezo-Codina and freshman Natalie Novotna will compete at the ITF Pro Circuits in Charleston, South Carolina, from Sept. 26-30.
