BLACKSBURG – The Virginia Tech women’s tennis team completed its first day of competition, on Friday, with one doubles win and one singles victory at the Virginia Fall Invitational, held at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center, in Charlottesville, Virginia.
In the Blue Singles Flight, junior Caroline Daxhelet defeated ODU’s Ingrid Vojcinakova in a three-set battle to claim the Hokies’ lone singles victory. Daxhelet captured the first set, but dropped the second. She then prevailed in set three to capture the match by a score of 6-3, 4-6, 6-3.
“It was a good match,” Daxhelet said. “I had a good start, but I played poorly in the second set. I lost four games in a row. I tried to fight back, but I lost 6-4. At the beginning of the third set, I played really well. I was up the entire set, but it was still close. I played her two times in the past, and I lost the last time, so it felt good to get revenge.
“Tomorrow, I will try to stay focus the entire match, especially in the second set. It happens too many times where I lose focus, so I just have to keep improving and get better.”
Daxhelet will face USC’s Silvia Chinellato in the quarterfinal round on Saturday, at 11:30 a.m.
In the White Flight, sophomore Emily Pence and junior Sarah Baron suffered straight-set setbacks in the first round of singles play. Pence dropped a 6-2, 6-3 decision to ODU’s Borislava Botusharova, and Baron fell to Marshall’s Derya Turhan by a score of 6-3, 6-4.
Pence and Baron will compete in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday, with both matches starting at 10 a.m. Pence will take on Utah’s Alexia Petrovic, while Baron will face Maryland’s Cassandra Thebault.
Freshman Fallon Delp also stumbled against UVa’s Hunter Bleser in the Orange Singles Flight, falling by a straight-set score of 6-0, 6-2. Delp will take on Marshall’s Maddie Silver in the consolation quarterfinals on Saturday, at 11 a.m.
In doubles action, Baron and Daxhelet bested UVa’s Camille Favero and Bleser by a score of 8-6 and advanced to the semifinal round of competition. However, Baron and Daxhelet could not overcome ODU’s Natalia Vlasova and Holly Hutchinson, dropping an 8-3 decision in the Orange Flight. The duo will compete for third place on Sunday, at 9 a.m., as they take on Marshall’s Anna Pomyatinskaya and Turhan.
The doubles tandem of Pence and Delp dropped two matches in the White Flight, falling to UVa’s Chloe Gullickson and Cassie Mercer (8-0) as well as Michigan’s Kara Hall and USC’s Brigit Foland (8-2). The duo will compete for third place in the consolation bracket on Sunday, at 9 a.m., as they square off against Marshall’s Daniela Dankanych and Marija Bogicevic.
