BLACKSBURG – Four members of the Virginia Tech women’s tennis team travels to Charlottesville, Virginia, to compete in the Virginia Fall Invitational from Sept. 23-25.
The three-day event will take place at the Sheridan Snyder Tennis Center. Friday and Sunday’s matches will begin at 9 a.m., with first serve set for 10 a.m. on Saturday. The tournament will consist of three singles and doubles flights and one round-robin singles and doubles brackets.
In addition to the Hokies and host Cavaliers, the field consists of seven other teams: Utah, Maryland, USC, Marshall, Michigan, George Washington and Old Dominion. Juniors Caroline Daxhelet and Sarah Baron along with sophomore Emily Pence and freshman Fallon Delp will compete for the Hokies this weekend.
“We are looking forward to starting our fall competition,” said 14-year coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods. “The team has been working hard, and they are ready to see their hard work and preparation pay off with some results in match play.
“I am looking for each member of our team to continue to improve with each match they play this fall. Our season is always a process of development, and we will have a good opportunity to gain many good learning experiences throughout the fall season to help us succeed during the spring.”
Daxhelet, ranked No. 96 in the ITA Preseason Top 100 Poll, will compete against ODU’s Ingrid Vojcinakova in the Blue Singles Flight at 1:15 p.m. The winner will then advance to the quarterfinal round set for 11:15 a.m. on Saturday.
Pence will play against ODU’s Borislava Botusharova in the White Slights Flight, while Baron squares off against Marshall’s Derya Turhan in the same bracket. Delp will compete against Virginia’s Hunter Bleser in the Orange Singles Bracket. All three matches are set to begin at 12 p.m., with the winners advancing to the quarterfinal rounds on Saturday.
In doubles action, Baron and Daxhelet will face Virginia’s Camille Favero and Hunter Bleser in the Orange Doubles Flight. Pence and Delp will team up to take on Virginia’s Chloe Gullickson and Cassie Mercer in the White Doubles Flight. Both doubles matches are set to begin at 9 a.m., with the winners advancing to the semifinal rounds immediately following the first match.
