LUBBOCK, TX – The 34th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team saw its season come to a close on Friday after dropping a 4-0 decision to No. 21 Mississippi State in the first round of the NCAA tournament. The Hokies finish the season with a 14-11 record while going 7-7 in the ACC for the second consecutive year.
Play began in Lubbock on a high note for Tech as Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita defeated State’s duo of Jasmine Lee and Louise Ronaldson on court 2 by a count of 6-2 for the first result of the afternoon. Georgiana Patrasc and Anastasia Rentouli struck back with a 6-2 victory of their own on court 3 over the Hokies’ Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar to force a point-deciding match over on 1. There, No. 30 Madison Harrison and Kristina Vozniak pulled out a narrow 7-5 win over Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford to put the Bulldogs on top heading into singles play.
No. 115 Harrison struck next for State, knocking off Williford 6-4, 6-2 out of the 3 spot to bump the score to 2-0. No. 101 Rentouli then gave the Bulldogs a 3-0 advantage with a 6-3, 6-2 victory over Mita over on court 4 to pull them within a point of clinching the match.
13th-ranked Lee accounted for State’s fourth and match-clinching point, defeating No. 60 Fusinato 6-3, 7-5 on court 1 to bring the 2016 season to a close for the Hokies.
Sansitha Nandakumar claimed her first set 6-0 over Jennifer Brown in a match that ultimately went unfinished on court 6. Daxhelet and Katherine Butler were both in the second sets of their matches as well before play was called.
Tech’s 2016 season was certainly not without its high points, including wins over then-No. 6 Duke and then-No. 16 Georgia Tech at home in Blacksburg in addition to Fusinato’s headline-making victory over the nation’s top-ranked player in Clemson’s Julia Eidukonyte. Coach Terry Ann Zawacki-Woods led Tech to consecutive NCAA Tournament appearances for the first time in program history and also placed two players on All-ACC teams for the second straight season.
