BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 31st-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team pulled off its second win over a Top 20 opponent on the season Friday, defeating No. 16 Georgia Tech in a dramatic 4-3 comeback victory at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center in Blacksburg. The Hokies (14-5, 7-3 ACC) have won four in a row as well as 9 of their last 11 matches dating back to January.
The afternoon began with the Jackets’ (12-6, 7-2) Johnisse Renaud and Rasheeda McAdoo striking first, besting Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita on court two by a count of 6-1. Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar then cruised past Megan Kurey and Alexa Anton-Ohlmeyer 6-2 in the three spot, forcing a doubles point-deciding match over on court one.
There, Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford faced a tall task in taking on the nation’s 19th-ranked doubles duo in Kendal Woodard and Paige Hourigan. Fusinato and Williford were narrowly edged out by a score of 7-5, giving Georgia Tech the doubles point and the early 1-0 lead.
The Yellow Jackets took a 2-0 lead as Mita couldn’t get past Alexis Prokopuik to kick off singles play, dropping a 6-1, 6-2 decision on court five. No. 105 Hourigan then topped Cerezo-Codina 6-2, 6-3 on court two to put Georgia Tech up 3-0 and bring them within a point of clinching the match.
No. 51 Fusinato took down one of the conference’s top players in the one spot in No. 30 Renaud, who’s fresh off being named the ACC Co-Player of the Week on Tuesday. The win put the Hokies on the board and kept hope alive as the score moved to 3-1 in favor of the Yellow Jackets.
Katherine Butler took care of Kurey over on court six by a score of 6-3, 6-4 to pull the Hokies within one point of tying the match. Williford took control of her match in the third set on court four, beating Woodard 6-4, 0-6, 6-1 to knot the score up at 3.
All eyes then shifted to court three, where Daxhelet was holding on to a third-set lead as she tried to complete the comeback for the Hokies. In the end, Daxhelet was successful, beating No. 117 McAdoo 4-6, 6-2, 6-3 to give Tech yet another signature victory over a highly ranked opponent.
The Hokies are heating up at the right time as they enter the homestretch of the regular season. Next weekend will be big for Tech as they welcome No. 3 North Carolina and No. 12 Virginia to Blacksburg for a pair of conference clashes between some of the top teams in the ACC.
