No. 33 Tech completes weekend sweep with 5-2 win over No. 43 N.C. State

RALEIGH, N.C. – The 33rd-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated No. 43 N.C. State by a score of 5-2 on Sunday at the J.W. Isenhour Tennis Center in Raleigh. The Hokies improve to 11-6 overall and 5-3 in the ACC.

Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita took down the Wolfpack’s Bianca Moldovan and Joanna Nalborska 6-3 on court 2 to begin the afternoon on the right foot for Tech. After Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford fell on court 1, Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar were bested on court 3 in the deciding match to give N.C. State the early 1-0 advantage.

Daxhelet evened the count at 1 to kick off singles play, defeating Moldovan 6-3, 6-1 out of the 3 spot to get the Hokies on the board. Williford followed suit on court 4, winning a two-set affair with Claudia Wiktorin 7-6, 6-2 to move the score to 2-1. Fusinato was edged out by No. 63 Martina Frantova 6-2, 7-6 on court 1 to once again knot the score before Cerezo-Codina earned a 4-6, 6-4, 6-3 win over Nalborska in the 2 spot to bring Tech within a point of clinching the match.

Mita then secured the Tech victory, knocking off Amanda Rebol in the 5 spot 6-3, 6-0 to make it 4-2 and give the Hokies their third straight conference road win. Katherine Butler added the exclamation mark on the afternoon on court 6, beating Stenta 6-1, 6-4 to make the final score 5-2 in favor of Tech.

The Hokies return home to Blacksburg on Friday to continue their conference slate, taking on Georgia Tech at 3 p.m. at the Burrows-Burleson Tennis Center.
