CORAL GABLES, Fla. – The 32-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team fell to 12th-ranked Miami 6-1 on Friday in a conference clash in Coral Gables, Florida. Tech falls to 10-5 and 3-3 in the ACC on the season while the Hurricanes improve to 9-4 overall and 4-2 in the conference.
The afternoon began in sunny South Florida with Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar dropping their match on court 3 to the Canes’ Clementina Riobueno and Silvia Fuentes. The 55th-ranked duo of Sinead Lohan and Calara Tanielian secured the doubles point for Miami, defeating Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita on court 2 to put the Hurricanes up 1-0 early. Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford’s match with 10th-ranked Stephanie Wagner and Wendy Zhang went unfinished in the 1 spot.
No. 6 Wagner moved the score to 2-0 after taking down No. 58 Fusinato in two sets, followed by Fuentes downing Williford on court 4 to make it 3-0 in favor of Miami. No. 7 Lohan then clinched the match for the Hurricanes out of the 2 spot, beating Cerezo-Codina 6-3, 6-4 to give Miami its ninth win on the season.
Play continued in Coral Gables as No. 117 put the Hokies on the board, besting No. 103 Zhang in three sets, 6-2, 4-6, 6-3 to prevent the shutout. Mita took Tanielian to a third-set tiebreaker on court 5, but ultimately fell 2-6, 6-4, 10-4. Katherine Butler also forced a third-set tiebreaker with Ana Madcur, but dropped the match 7-5, 5-7, 10-7 to wrap up the afternoon with the score 6-1 in favor of Miami.
The Hokies will look to bounce back on Sunday as they travel north to Tallahassee for a noon tilt with ACC foe Florida State.
