BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 39th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team pulled off an impressive 5-2 victory over the nation’s sixth-ranked team in Duke on Sunday to move their record to 10-4 overall and 3-2 in the ACC. Duke falls to 10-2 on the year and tallies their first conference loss of the season at the hand of the Hokies.

The Blue Devils claimed the first doubles match on court 3 before Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford took care of Beatrice Capra and Jessica Ho in the 1 spot by a score of 6-2 to even things up. Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita were locked in a tight 6-6 battle with Ellyse Hamlin and Samantha Harris to decide the doubles point on court 2 before claiming the tiebreaker and giving Tech the early 1-0 advantage.

Mita didn’t take long to earn the Hokies’ second point on court 5, defeating Christina Makarova 6-1, 6-0 to keep the momentum going for Tech. Duke, however, climbed right back in it with a pair of wins of courts 6 and 1 to knot the score at two a piece. Elena Cerezo-Codina put Tech back on top with a 7-6, 6-1 win over Samantha Harris in the 2 spot, leaving it up to Williford or Daxhelet to clinch the upset. Both Hokies were in the lead when Williford ended the match with a hard-fought 2-6, 6-1, 6-4 win over Ho, making it 4-2 and giving Virginia Tech one of its biggest wins in program history.

So far this season, Tech already has a singles victory over the nation’s top player (Fusinato over Eidukonyte of Clemson) and a victory over a top-10 conference opponent under its belt. The Hokies will look to continue their success next weekend as they travel down to Coral Gables, Florida for a Friday afternoon tilt with No. 21 Miami.
