No. 41 Tech takes down No. 71 Boston College 7-0

BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 41st-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated No. 71 Boston College 7-0 in Blacksburg on Sunday, recording their sixth shutout of the season and winning their seventh match in a row. Tech improves to 9-3 and 2-1 in the ACC on the year while Boston College falls to 5-6 and 0-4 in the league.

After Boston College claimed the first doubles match to start the afternoon, Elena Cerezo-Codina and Sansitha Nandakumar defeated the Eagles’ Heini Salonen and Wan-Yi Sweeting on court 3 by a count of 6-2, turning the focus to a tightly contested match on court 2 to decide the doubles point. There, Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita edged out a 7-5 (3) win over Emily Safron and Katya Vasilyev to push the Hokies out to an early 1-0 lead.

No. 49 Francesca Fusinato took care of Lexi Borr in the 1 spot, defeating her 6-1, 6-1 to record the first singles point of the match and put Tech up 2-0. Mita followed soon after with a 6-2, 6-1 victory over Sweeting, pulling Tech within a point of its seventh win in a row. Cerezo-Codina clinched the match for the Hokies, defeating Vasilyev 6-1, 6-1 to give the team its second ACC victory in as many days and its third victory over a ranked opponent in the last four matches.

Daxhelet kept the shutout in tact on court 3, finishing off Safron 6-2, 6-4 for her second singles victory of the weekend. Katherine Butler also picked up her second win of the weekend on court 6, taking down Salonen 7-5, 7-5 to make it 6-0 in favor of Tech. Kelly Williford sealed the perfect weekend for the team in singles play on court 4, battling Jackie Urbanati and winning 7-6 (3), 7-6 (2) to give the Hokies their ninth victory of the season and second in conference play.

The Hokies will head to Winston-Salem, N.C. next Saturday for a match with Wake Forest before returning home on Sunday to face Duke at noon.
