BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 45th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team improved to 7-3 on the season this weekend after taking down No. 29 Rice and No. 74 Marshall at the Huntington Tennis Club on the campus of Marshall University. The Hokies have won five straight matches and haven’t recorded a loss since falling to Clemson 4-3 back in January.
On Friday, Tech opened the weekend by securing the doubles point against Rice after wins from the duos of Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford on court 1 and Elena Cerezo-Codina with Sansitha Nandakumar on court 3. No. 41 Fusinato and Williford continued their momentum in to singles play as both claimed 6-2, 6-1 victories over the Owls’ No. 84 Lindsey Hodge and Savannah Durkin, respectively. No. 113 Caroline Daxhelet scored the match-clinching fourth point for Tech with a three set victory over Alison Ho on court 3 to give the Hokies the 4-1 upset win.
Sunday’s tilt with No. 74 Marshall began with the Hokies claiming all three doubles matches, once again giving them the 1-0 advantage heading into singles competition. Raluca Mita struck first for Tech in singles, sweeping Marshall’s Marija Bogicevic 6-0, 6-0 to move the score to 2-0. Daxhelet finished next, winning in three sets over Rachel Morales on court 3 by a count of 6-1, 1-6, 6-3 to move Tech within one point of clinching the match. No. 106 Cerez-Codina did just that for the Hokies, claiming the 6-4, 2-6, 6-4 win over Anna Pomyatinskaya in the 2 spot to put Tech up 4-1 and secure the weekend sweep. Play continued as Katherine Butler added an exclamation mark to the victory with a 7-6 (2), 6-3 on court 6 over Anna Gulsrud to give Tech its fifth point in the 5-2 triumph.
The Hokies will continue ACC play this upcoming weekend with two big conference matches against Pittsburgh and Boston College in Blacksburg.
