BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 47th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team defeated West Virginia 7-0 in Blacksburg on Sunday, marking their third shutout in a row and giving them their fifth win of the year.
Caroline Daxhelet and Raluca Mita struck first for the Hokies (5-3, 0-1 ACC) in doubles play with a 6-3 win in the 2 slot over Carolina Lewis and Paula Goetz of West Virginia. Francesca Fusinato and Kelly Williford followed up with a 6-4 victory over Hailey Barrett and Habiba Shaker to give Tech an early 1-0 lead over the Mountaineers heading into singles play.
Mita also opened up the scoring in singles competition, beating Kaja Mrgole on court 5 by a count of 6-1, 6-0 to move the score to 2-0 in favor of the Hokies. Williford followed suit on court 4 with a victory of her own, defeating Lewis 6-2, 6-2 to bring Tech within one point of clinching the match. No. 41 Fusinato took it from there, staying hot and defeating Shaker 6-0, 6-4 to make it 4-0 and give Tech its fifth win of the year.
Play continued in Blacksburg and the Hokies kept their foot on the pedal. No. 108 Elena Cerezo-Codina pulled out a 6-1, 7-6 win over Barrett on court 2 for Tech’s fifth point, followed by No. 113 Daxhelet taking care of Goetz 6-3, 6-4 in the 3 spot to make it 6-0. Katherine Butler rounded out the afternoon with a 7-5, 6-3, 10-6 win over Lyn Yuen Choo to wrap up the 7-0 decision.
Tech will hit the road and head to Huntington, W.Va next weekend for a pair of matches with Marshall and Rice on Friday and Saturday, respectively.
