BLACKSBURG, Va. – The 48th-ranked Virginia Tech women’s tennis team improved to 4-3 on the season after shutting out Richmond and UMBC in Blacksburg on Sunday. The Hokies didn’t lose a single set in singles or doubles over the course of the afternoon.
Richmond came to town first for a 10 a.m. tilt with the Hokies. Katherine Butler and Mariana Silva got the scoring started for Tech with a 6-0 win over the Spiders’ Ana Ramirez and Emily Gitman on court 3. Elena Cerezo-Codina and Raluca Mita took it from there, winning 6-3 over Ana Abadias and Gaby Rosales over on court 2 to claim the doubles point for Tech.
Singles play began with Mita cruising past Katya Salas 6-0, 6-1 on court 5 to make it 2-0 in favor of the Hokies. Francesca Fusinato finished next on court 1, beating Abadias 6-1, 6-1 before No. 108 Caroline Daxhelet sealed the deal with a win over Brittany Boys in the 3 spot. The Hokies continued to roll after clinching the match, with Cerezo-Codina, Kelly Williford and Butler all added wins to move the final count to 7-0 in favor of Tech.
UMBC was up next for Virginia Tech as the second leg of the day’s doubleheader. Fusinato and Williford paired up and took down Mariami Dolashvili and Madlena Kurasz 6-2, followed by Butler and Sansitha Nandakumar downing the Retrievers’ Alice Taylor and Charlotte Tonjann 6-1 on court 3. Play continued as Daxhelet and Mita finished off Maria Siopacha and Shannon Cleary on court 2 by a score of 6-1.
Butler was first off the courts in singles play, winning a 6-1, 6-1 decision over Tonjann to make it 2-0. Daxhelet grabbed the third point with a swift 6-1, 6-1 win against Kurasz, followed by Williford taking down Dolashvili 6-1, 6-0 out of the 3 spot to clinch the match for the Hokies. Play continued as Mita, Nandakumar and Fusinato rounding out Tech’s perfect day.
Next up for the Hokies is the ITA National Indoors in Madison, Wisconsin, taking place Friday, Februrary 5th through Monday the 8th.
